red bank basketball team 2014.jpgOn November 11, 2014, the Red Bank Middle School Varsity Girls Basketball Team had a wonderful night! The Lady Lionettes were playing against Signal Mountain Eagles at Red Bank. Their five starters were Jasmine Roberts, Lanija Bowens, Kimbra Dunning, Ja'Nya West, and Shelby Romans.

There were 6.1 seconds left in the 4th quarter, and the game was tied up at 25-25. The Lady Lionettes plan was to get the ball and score as soon as possible. It was the Lionettes ball, Jasmine has to pass the ball in. The ball was passed to Shelby . Shelby passed back to Jasmine. Jasmine took a risky chance and passed it to Kimbra. Kimbra shot it, and she scored right at the buzzer! 2 points were scored for Red Bank. Everyone in the crowd was cheering. It was now 27-25! The Lady Lionettes had defeated the Signal Mountain Eagles!

It was a very special night for the Lady Lionettes, especially for Kimbra. Now everyone knows that the Lady Lionettes can work through an extreme amount of pressure in a short amount of time. Congratulations to the Lionettes!!

The History of USATF By Kimbra

images.jpgUSA Track & Field (USATF) is an organization for track & field athletes that can benefit your life. You can start at a very young age (7) and end at a old age (100) too.

On January 30, 1878, rower and runner William B. Curtis founded what became the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in New York City. The name was formally adopted in 1887. The AAU governed the sport of track & field until 1979, when the first Amateur Sports Act decreed that the AAU could no longer hold international franchises for more than one sport. In late 1979 with its first annual meeting, conjunction with that year's AAU Convention and a constitutional convention. The first stand-alone annual meeting occurred in Atlanta, Georgia, in late fall of 1980. In 1992, name was changed to USATF, to increase recognition for the organization and the sport in the United States.

I’m a member of USATF.  When you do the sport, track & field, they give you a membership to join them. This is effective because you get discounts on all the lastest Nike, Asics, Adidas, and all name brand gear. I believe that this organization gives you more experience in traveling than school events do, because you have 3 meets. One of them is State. The second is Regional. Lastly there are Nationals, which usually occurs near the end of July. These meets occur yearly, which shows your improvements each year.  I actually enjoy this organization. In fact, I love this organization. The people who work for USATF take care of you and keep you hydrated. They care for you as if you were an old person. Hopefully, more people will join this and enjoy it like I have.

Veronica is 26 years of age. She was born in New York, but was raised in Illinois. Veronica graduated from Barrington High School.           Her inspiration for her famous story Divergent is really interesting. While she was writing, she had four things that inspired her. The first one was from college, where she learned about exposure therapy to help people overcome their phobias. The second one was from listening to a song while driving to Minnesota. The third was because she was inspired by the book, Harry Potter. Lastly, the fourth thing that she was inspired by was herself, and that’s how she created the character, Tris.

How Music Affects You By Robyn

image.jpg
Have you ever come home so angry that your face looked like a tomato because it was so red? If so, do I have some advice for you. Yes, sometimes you need to work it out in different ways, but did you know there is a much simpler way than kicking the cat?  Just listen to music. There are many different kinds of music that can increase happiness. The first kind of music that will increase happiness is upbeat or fast tempo. This includes songs such as “Hot and Cold” by Katie Perry, “Billy Jean” by Michael Jackson, and “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars. Other kinds of music that promote the feelings of happiness are songs written in a major key rather than a minor key. A major key is proven to lift people out of sadness or negative moods. Songs like this include “Firework” by Katie Perry, “Forget You’” by Cee Lo Green, and “The Lazy Song” by Bruno Mars.
Another way music affects you is it can help you learn things and remember what you learned. Songs tap into systems in our brains that are sensitive to beat and melody. For example, everyone knows the ABC song which is the way we all learned our letters.
For more information on how music affects your brain check out these two links. The first link is more on how music affects your mood. The second one is about how music affects your ability to learn.

What is Ebola? By Kristin

Ebola is a virus  that can cause people to get very sick  and even die. Symptoms can start with a fever and a headache, like the flu.  It could get worse and cause life threatening symptoms, such as bleeding and trouble breathing. Bleeding in the skin causes a red rash that appears all over the body. Bleeding can occur internally as well as from the eyes, ears, and nose
(Gupta and Smith).
Ebola is spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of sick people. Protocol calls for those who have been exposed to be isolated and monitored for symptoms for up to 21 days. 4,818 of people died of Ebola and there have been 13,042 cases reported since November 5, 2014.  (Associated Press)
